The Wingers

It is a very sad day today to hear that one of my musical partners and friends Gil Pope had passed away. Gil was one of the best all-around musicians I have had the honor to play music with. A couple of years back, when he suffered a major stroke that robbed him of his ability to play it also broke a piece of his heart off because being a musician was such a big part of who he was, and where he found joy was playing for audience and sharing music with friends. You will be dearly missed my friend and I will keep our "Wingers" webpage up In Loving Memory of you and your music so folks may have a chance to visit and watch some videos of us and listen to some of your exceptional gift as a musician.
Thank you for the opportunity to share so many musical experiences with you Gil and I hope we can play again on the other side. In the meantime, Rest in Peace my friend.... be free of your illness and go join the Angel Band. They'll be lucky to have you!
The Wingers were formed in 2006 when Gil Pope had joined me on a gig at Perks and Corks in Westerly, RI. I had met Gil at the Joyce open mike when I was running it and called him to play a Perks gig with me one night. Gil is an awesome singer and player. When Bryan, the owner at Perks heard us for the first time he asked what we called ourselves and we said "don't know, were just wingin' it". That's pretty much when we got our name and our start. Gil is now a great friend and we have performed together around a hundred nights in Rhode Island. This duo leans a little more towards the covers, country, and bluegrass, and is not as edgy as the Amazing Rhythm Mule (aka The Old Dogs) yet still full of great harmonies and instrumentals.
